Philippine Street Mime History

Street Mime was introduced here in the Philippines by a famous street performer Human Statue group from Spain invited by the family Alcoreza who owns Anthology in Malate, Manila on March 2003. After their performances here in the country for a week, Dennis and his wife Cecile decided to make it as a regular theme for their business. Thats when they hire local artist / dancer Enriquito Mojica, founder of Pilyoz and his cousin Mark Cielo to continue performing a human statue for their resto bar. Filipinos were stunned and there resto bar became one of the hottest spot that you need to not missed checking if you will ever dropped by in Manila baywalk that time.

On the first week of September 2003, after me "kasmotdime" and my friend Oliver's aka "Gasbog" participate as mascot Whinnie the Pooh and Tigger for Kyla's birthday (Alcoreza's daughter), we decided to walk around to see what Malate can offer. One of the plan is to look for a street foods around since it's the first time time we had to explore Malate. After an hour strolling and chatting, our feet landed us to bay walk and that time all of the grills and bars are already open. We accidentally stopped by a weird commotion and noticed a guy standing on a big platform box, acting like a real statue, It was Mark doing his fancy airwalk and every people passing by were amazed. We found it cool and breathlessly watching him when and what will his next move would be. All of a sudden, a person we recognize approaches us. It was Mr. Dennis Alcoreza and offered us to be one of his talents, and that's when the street pantomime was born.

On our first day working as a street mime, we have the worst makeup ever. Our face look so terrible the whole night. We first uses a "chin chun su" on our faces and splashed it with baby powder, adding a red lipstick that we stole from our mom's make up kit (not a professional makeup but uses a hypo-allergenic mime make up now), but became one of the greatest  and first performance we ever had. It became a hit! And a lot of people passing, stops and cheered us in our performance. All of the customer were really happy and was amazed by our art. Due to a lot of positive feedbacks from customer, the owner decided to add more performers like Marvin Cura, a mime Stilt Walker and the first midget pantomime Darwin Valdez aka "Lil John".

After a few months, I decided to leave and teamed up with Marvin to form a new mime group which we named it as a Philippine Mime Artist (known as StarMime Artist today) to continue the art of street mime comedy at Residence Inn Tagaytay. Oliver Dioneda also decided to form his mime group and called it S.M.A.C.E. And on 2005, he tied up with Pilyoz and the StarMime Artist group. Those are the three biggest group name that offers great talents of street mime until today here in the Philippines.
