About Gigtown
Long before the Internet came to the Philippines, there was the “Palengke.” The Palengke, was literally, the marketplace for musicians and entertainers. The place to go to when one needed the services of a musician or an entertainer.
In those days, one never needed to deal with a middleman or a booking agent. One simply went to the Palengke and talk business directly with the merchandise itself, so to speak.
Where was the Palengke? In a little corner on Avenida Rizal and Raon St. in Sta. Cruz, Manila, where musicians looking for engagements would hang out till well past six in the evening waiting for clients.
The Palengke is long gone. It has given way to technology, which gave birth to the Internet. But if it means anything, the end of the Palengke was the beginning of the Filipino as a global musician, showing off his music savvy and flair in Singapore, Hong Kong, even as far away as Switzerland in Europe.
Today, the Palengke is just an historical footnote to a bygone era. However, for posterity, we are reviving it and reinventing it as Gigtown. Gigtown is the old Palengke with a brand-new face… a salute to a uniquely Filipino way of doing business in the field of music.
Come to Gigtown. It’s open 24 hours a day. And the beauty of it is, you need no longer have to go to that little corner on Avenida Rizal and Raon to book a musician of your choice.
Why Gigtown?
As well all know, music has become a multi-billion-dollar industry globally. Men and women from all over the world, united by their passion for music, now make up a truly global village. We want to know them. We want to know about their dreams and aspirations – professionally and personally. And we want to know about their problems as well.
With a vast army of musicians on the road out there, we see a continuous movement of music people worldwide. This is where Gigtown comes in.
Gigtown, in effect, is a musician’s guild and community that will look after your interest and welfare – especially if you are on your own far away from home.
